Links and sources in answers

An answer can send a reader to a page through a link in its text or a source listed under it. The Platform passes on only links it can vouch for, so a reader gets no link rather than a broken one. That is why relative links in uploaded files are reduced to their text.

When you upload a .md or .txt file, every link with a relative address, such as ../setup/install.html or #options, is reduced to its link text. A relative address works only inside the site it came from; repeated in an answer anywhere else, it would be broken. The file's row under Uploaded says how many links this removed, for example "3 links couldn't be used because they were relative." The rest of the file is unaffected.

To keep a link, write its full address, starting with https://, and upload the file again. Knowledge Files from ePublisher usually show the note, because their links between pages are relative; the Reverb Assistant's citations don't depend on those links. Imported website pages lose nothing, because the importer makes their links absolute.

While an answer streams, the Embedded Assistant shows its links as plain text. When the answer is complete, the Platform checks each link, and the ones it keeps become clickable. A link is kept when its address:

  • appears in the Assistant's knowledge, as an imported page or as a full address written in an uploaded file, or

  • is on one of the Assistant's Origin Domains.

Any other link is reduced to its text. An address the Assistant writes out as plain text becomes a link when it passes the same check. Links to the visitor's own site open in the same tab; others open in another tab.

The Sources row

Under an answer, the Embedded Assistant lists the imported website pages the answer drew on, by title, under Sources. Each opens its page. Uploaded files, Knowledge Files and Reasoning Fuel alike, never appear there, because they have no address. An answer that cited nothing has no Sources row.

To get your pages listed, import the site; see Import a website. For help published with WebWorks Reverb 2.0, import the published help as a website.

Citations in Reverb 2.0 help

The Reverb Assistant cites the Knowledge Files it answered from, and Reverb 2.0 help links each citation to the page and section it came from, through the Landmark IDs in the Knowledge Files. Topics and headings with their own IDs in your source documents give citations that land on the right section.

The link check above is the Embedded Assistant's. Reverb 2.0 help shows an answer's links as the Assistant writes them.
