Knowledge Base
An Assistant's Knowledge Base is the content it answers from. The Assistant searches it for the passages that bear on each question, so what the Knowledge Base says decides what the Assistant knows. Each Assistant has its own, under Knowledge Base on its Configure tab.
Grounding Knowledge and Reasoning Fuel
Everything in a Knowledge Base is one of two kinds of content.
| Grounding Knowledge | Reasoning Fuel |
|---|---|---|
What it is | Your published content: pages readers can open | Everything else you upload: notes, references, background |
Where it comes from | Imported website pages, and the Knowledge Files an ePublisher build produces | Files you upload |
Shown as a source | Yes: the Embedded Assistant lists imported pages under its answers, and Reverb 2.0 help links citations of Knowledge Files to their pages | No: it informs answers but is never shown as a source |
Rules belong in the Assistant's Instructions, which apply to every answer. Facts belong in the Knowledge Base, where they are looked up when a question needs them. A lookup can miss, so a fact the Assistant must never get wrong goes in the Instructions as well. See Write an Assistant's Instructions and Reasoning Fuel.
Where its content comes from
Source | Adds | Kept current by | How |
|---|---|---|---|
Websites | The pages under an address on one of the Assistant's Origin Domains, read from the site's sitemap | A refresh about every 7 days while the Assistant is in deployment, and Refresh at any time | |
Uploads |
| Uploading the updated files and removing the old ones | Upload files to the Knowledge Base; Upload Knowledge Files from ePublisher |
To go into deployment, an Assistant needs at least one imported website or uploaded file that hasn't failed. See Put an Assistant in deployment. The files in all of an organization's Knowledge Bases count toward its plan's storage cap; see Knowledge storage.
Indexing
Every change to a Knowledge Base, whether files saved, a website imported or refreshed, or anything removed, is indexed before the Assistant answers from it. Meanwhile the Knowledge Base shows "Indexing — your changes will go live shortly.", and the Assistant keeps answering from the content it had, in Preview and in deployment alike. When the banner clears, the change is live.
A Knowledge Base takes one change at a time. While it is indexing, its files and websites can't be changed; save or import again once the banner has cleared. If indexing fails, the earlier content keeps serving and the affected file or website says why. See Knowledge Base problems.
