Credits
Credits are the dollars an organization holds to pay for AI Assistant usage. Assistants in deployment spend them on the answers they give visitors, except answers on the free model. Building and testing an Assistant in Preview draws on a free daily allowance instead.
Where usage is paid from
| Daily preview allowance | Included allowance | Purchased credits |
|---|---|---|---|
Pays for | Preview answers in the Assistant editor | Any usage | Any usage |
Comes from | Every organization, each day | Each month of a paid plan; Pay-As-You-Go has none | Buy Credits, auto-replenishment, and the one-time signup credit on your first organization |
Lasts | Until 00:00 UTC, when it is refilled; unused allowance doesn't carry over | Until the plan's next month, when it is reset; unused dollars don't carry over, and they end with the plan | Each purchase expires 12 months after it is made |
Shown in | The Preview tab, as a share used | Settings > Billing, as Included this month | Settings > Billing, under Credit Balance |
Preview answers draw on the daily preview allowance. Once it is used up, the rest of that day's preview answers are paid like any other usage. Everything else draws on the included allowance first, and on purchased credits only after the allowance runs out. Purchased credits are spent oldest first; the signup credit doesn't expire. The Plans page shows each plan's included allowance. See Credit expiry.

Preview answers after the day's preview allowance is used
Creating and configuring Assistants, preview answers within the allowance, answers on the free model, and the dashboard's analysis of visitor questions cost nothing. Knowledge storage isn't billed either: it counts against your plan's storage cap. See Knowledge storage.
An answer's cost depends on the Assistant's model and reasoning effort, and on the length of the question and of the answer. Each preview answer shows its cost, which is what the same answer costs in deployment. Settings > Billing > View all transactions lists every charge. To limit what one Assistant can spend in a day, set its daily budget.
When credits run out
When the included allowance and purchased credits are used up, Assistants in deployment keep answering on the free model, with reasoning off and at no charge, until credits are added or the allowance resets. Settings > Billing shows Free model active meanwhile. Free answers have a daily limit per organization; past it, Assistants pause until 00:00 UTC. See The free model.
To keep purchased credits from running out, set up auto-replenishment.
Who can see and buy credits
The organization's owner and its billing managers. Only they see the Plans and Billing tabs in Settings; anyone else who needs credits added asks one of them. See Roles and permissions.
